Do you have a keen interest in fashion, art, and cultural heritage?

Toronto Metropolitan University and Nia Centre for the Arts have partnered to launch Couture & Culture, an exciting 10-week workshop series designed for youth and emerging artists with an interest in exploring the intersection of fashion, Black identity, and artistic expression. This program will offer a one-of-a-kind opportunity to delve into the vibrant and evolving world of the fashion industry, combining hands-on construction and teachings on fashion as a powerful form of artistic expression. Each session will tie back to fashion’s connections with cultural heritage and its impact on shaping individual style.

The program is beginner-friendly and offers a comprehensive introduction to the fashion and costume design industry. Participants will gain insight into educational pathways from TMU students and alumni, as well as connect with industry professionals and fashion influencers who have built successful careers in the field.

Applications close Friday April 25, 2025 at 11:59pm.

Through this program, participants will explore:

  • Fashion & Identity: Understanding Black fashion’s historical and cultural significance
  • Design & Craftsmanship: Hands-on experience with tailoring, draping, textile work, and emerging digital media
  • Visual Storytelling & Creative Direction: Exploring fashion through photography, curation, and media
  • Fashion Business: Covering marketing, branding, and industry insights for emerging designers
  • Personal Projects & Mentorship: Weekly critiques, hands-on support, and access to studio space
  • Final Exhibition: Showcasing student creations in a culminating event

Eligibility
All are welcomed to apply, however, as there are only 10 spots available for these sessions, we will be prioritizing young creatives who:

  • Are between the ages of 16-24
