Sketching Heroes

Do you have a keen interest in visual arts, storytelling and superheroes?

Sketching Heroes is an 8-week workshop series for youth aged 15-18, particularly aspiring writers, beginner to intermediate illustrators, and comic book lovers looking to make something of their own. Through this program, you’ll explore the fundamentals of comic book creation, from foundational sketching techniques to the basics of storytelling and character development. It’s a hands-on experience where participants will be guided step-by-step to develop their own comic strips, from initial brainstorming to final production, emphasizing characters that reflect your own cultural heritage and personal experiences. The workshop will also highlight potential career opportunities in the comic book and publishing industries. It’s all about giving participants the tools to tell their stories their way while celebrating individuality and creativity.

Every Tuesday from February 4 to March 25, from 6:00-8:00pm, participants will be exploring:

• Representation of characters that reflect the youth’s cultural heritage and experiences 
• Pride and empowerment in their black identity 
• Fundamental storytelling / writing elements
• Visual art techniques specific to comic book creation 
• Individual style, creativity and storytelling done “your way”
• Comic book creation process from pre to post production 
• Employment opportunities within comic book and publishing industry

Eligibility
As there are only 10 spots available for these sessions, we will be prioritizing young creatives who:

• Are between the ages of 15-18
• Can commit to the full duration of the program
