A SPACE TO AMPLIFY YOUR VOICE. A SPACE TO DESIGN OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOU!
Supporting the needs of youth has always been at the forefront of Nia Centre’s mission. Recognizing the need to amplify the voices of Black youth within the organization, Nia Centre launched Artists for Recreating Opportunities (A.F.R.O), a Youth Steering Committee (YSC).
A.F.R.O was a collective of Black youth between the ages of 16-30, who played a transformational role within the design, decision-making and practices within Nia Centre. Their voices provided a pathway for youth ideas to play a vital role in the shaping of Nia Centre’s space design, organizational development, community visibility, programming and initiatives. As A.F.R.O members, youth were provided with;
Training In Anti-Oppression and Conflict- Resolution
Mentorship and Professional Work Experience
Create and facilitate youth and community programming
Networking and skill-building opportunities;
The opportunity to attend and participate in conferences and forums across Ontario
A.F.R.O provided youth the opportunity to learn about their cultural identity, engage in creative action to unify and empower youth and community members, and create safe spaces of healing and through artistic and cultural programming and experiences.
