This month at Niaflix, we’re screening Boxcutter, directed by Reza Dahya.
The film follows Rome, an aspiring rapper whose laptop is stolen just days before a life-changing meeting with a Grammy Award–winning producer. Set against the streets of Toronto, Boxcutter is a race against time to reclaim art, voice, and possibility.

This month’s film selection was curated by Toronto-born filmmaker, photographer, videographer, and digital storyteller Selina McCallum.

About Selina McCallum, January Niaflix Curator

Selina McCallum is a Toronto-born filmmaker, photographer, videographer, and digital storyteller whose work sits at the intersection of community, culture, and creativity. Raised by her Tanzanian mother and Jamaican father, Selina’s multicultural upbringing deeply shapes her storytelling—rooted in empathy, human connection, and the belief that every story has the power to spark change.

Ambitious and endlessly hardworking, Selina has built a growing body of films that spotlight voices and narratives often overlooked. In December 2022, she directed her fifth short film, Fitriya: Muslim On and Off the Court, a 13-minute documentary following Fitriya Mohamed — Executive Director and Founder of the Muslim Women’s Summer Basketball League — and exploring what it truly means to be a Muslim woman athlete navigating identity, faith, and sport. The film enjoyed a successful international festival run, with selections in Canada, India, Turkey, and Australia, and earned two awards for its powerful storytelling and cultural impact.

Selina is also the founder of Leverage Lens, a film and arts initiative dedicated to nurturing human-interest storytelling, championing emerging creatives, and building community through documentary, photography, and inclusive arts programming. Beyond her creative work, Selina is also an accomplished social media manager who leverages her background in digital strategy to expand the reach and impact of every project she touches. Whether behind the camera or behind a campaign, she is driven by a commitment to amplify stories that matter. Explore her films at www.selinamccallum.com/films.html.
