Join us for an evening of music, connection, and rhythm as medicine.
Are you 50+? Eager to learn a new skill on a fun, artistic evening in the city?
Nia Centre for the Arts has partnered with Alpha Rhythm Roots to bring you a two-part workshop, combining percussion and movement. For the first part of this series, participants will be guided through foundational drumming techniques of the Djembe, while also exploring the cultural significance and history of the instrument and its roots in West Africa.
We’re going to teach you about the richness of African musical traditions while also inviting personal reflection, emotional release, and cultural celebration. Join us on Thursday, August 28th at 3pm for an evening of music, connection, and rhythm as medicine. Bring your auntie or your nephew, your grandfather or your niece. It’s a family affair.
We only have 30 spots available, so be sure to book your tickets now!
The second part of this series will be a dance workshop held on Tuesday, September 9th at 3pm.
Originally from Guinea, West Africa, Alpha, the founder and artistic director of Alpha Rhythm Roots, has been spreading the joyfully infectious sounds of Mandé percussion and West African music from his base in Toronto for over twenty years. Along the way he has given lessons to countless students of all ages, and provided traditional instruments for students and other clients near and far. Alpha will be running a drumming workshop, offering a rich banquet of interlocking grooves that are the hallmarks of West African percussion traditions.
